Ralph Waldo Emerson delivered his controversial Divinity School Address at Harvard. He challenged traditional Christian doctrine, questioned reliance on miracles, and presented Jesus as an exemplary human expression of the divine.

1870

Georgia becomes the last of the former Confederate states to be readmitted to the Union.

1916

William Boeing incorporated Pacific Aero Products Company, the business later renamed the Boeing Airplane Company. Navy engineer George Conrad Westervelt was an important early collaborator and co-designer of the company’s first aircraft.

1932

President Hoover cuts his salary by 20%, from $75,000 to $60,000. He also reduced his cabinet member salaries by 15%. Both reductions were a part of President Hoover's attempt to balance the budget government-wide.

1962

1966

The U.S. and South Vietnam begin Operation Hastings to push the North Vietnamese out of the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. The offensive remains one of the most studied engagements of war because of the intense helicopter assaults and jungle fighting.

1979

President Jimmy Carter gives his A Crisis of Confidence speech to Americans. The speech addressed the confidence of the American people after years of turmoil--assassinations, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal.

2002

John Walker Lindh pleaded guilty to supplying services to the Taliban and carrying an explosive during the commission of a felony. He received a 20-year sentence and was released in 2019 after serving approximately 17 years.

2006

Twitter launched publicly as a social-networking and microblogging service. Elon Musk acquired the company in October 2022, rebranded it as X in 2023, and moved its primary web address to x.com in 2024.
