The telegraph links New York and Boston using the technology Samuel Morse patented for the first time. Three years before, Morse sent the first official message from Washington D.C. to Baltimore.

1889

Joshua Slocum completes the first solo circumnavigation of the Earth. Nearly 80 years later, Robin Knox-Johnston completed the first non-stop solo circumnavigation.

1893

Prices collapse at the New York Stock Exchange drawing the United States into a deep economic depression.

1978

Gillette Co. receives a patent for the first successful erasable ball-point pen.

June 27th Celebrated Birthdays

Harriet Hubbard Ayer - 1849

In 1886, Ayer launched the Harriet Hubbard Ayer Company, the first cosmetic company owned by a woman. She also became a journalist for the New York Post.

Mildred Hill - 1859

Together with her sister Patty Hill, Mildred Hill composed songs for children and published Song Stories for Kindergarten. The melody for one composition, "Good Morning to All," gained worldwide fame by another name. Sung at birthday celebrations for generations, "Happy Birthday to You" became the focus of a lawsuit in 2013 when the copyright came under the scrutiny of a class-action lawsuit.

Paul Laurence Dunbar - 1872

The American poet began publishing poetry at the age of 16. He would go on to publish several collections of poetry and short stories including Oak and Ivy and Folks From Dixie.

Helen Keller - 1880

After illness took her sight and her hearing, Helen Keller found her voice and became an advocate for the blind and deaf, an author and lecturer. Her story and the challenges she faced along with her mentor and teacher, Anne Sullivan, have been told through novels, plays, and film.

Bob Keeshan - 1927

Best-known for his role as Captain Kangaroo on the children's television show by the same name, Keeshan also produced the show.

J.J. Abrams - 1966

The American film producer and director has brought us shows such as Alias, Westworld, and Lost. He also directed the film Super 8 and has earned several Emmy nods.
